Toll blending cleaners and degreasers

Updated

Cleaners and degreasers are straightforward blends with two different plants behind them: aqueous products and solvent products.

Talk to a specialist Who owns the materials, who carries the price risk, and the clauses to settle before a formulation leaves your building.

Aqueous or solvent

An aqueous cleaner is a water-based blend of surfactants, builders and other components; a solvent degreaser is a blend of solvents that is often flammable. Few sites are equally set up for both, so ask which a toll blending degreaser manufacturer usually runs.

For an aqueous product ask how water quality is controlled; for a solvent product ask about flammable liquid storage, bonding and grounding, and ventilation.

Flammable solvent degreasers

OSHA's flammable liquids standard, 29 CFR 1910.106, sets the storage and handling rules for flammable liquids at the site. Ask a blender to confirm it is set up for the flashpoint of your degreaser before you send a sample.

Safety data sheets and labels

Hazard communication duties follow the product. Agree who writes the safety data sheet and the label, whose name is on them, and who answers a request for the sheet. Under a toll you are usually the party placing the product in commerce.

Questions, answered directly

Can one blender make both aqueous cleaners and solvent degreasers?

Some can, but the plants differ: solvent work needs flammable liquid storage and handling that an aqueous blender may not have. Ask which products the site runs every week rather than which it can run.

Who is responsible for the safety data sheet?

Agree it in writing. Under a toll you usually own the product and place it in commerce, so the sheet is normally yours, with the blender supplying the test data it generates.
