Toll blending coatings and sealers
Updated
Coatings and sealers are blended like other liquids and behave very differently in the plant. Viscosity, solvent and filling decide which coating manufacturer can run them.
Talk to a specialist Who owns the materials, who carries the price risk, and the clauses to settle before a formulation leaves your building.
Coating and sealer toll blending services
A thin waterborne coating and a heavy solvent-borne sealer need different mixers, different pumps and different filling. Ask what viscosity range the site's dispersers and fillers handle, and whether it has run a product like yours.
Ask too how equipment is cleaned between waterborne and solvent-borne batches, because cleaning is where cross-contamination and much of the cost sit.
Patches and crack fillers
Patches and crack fillers are pastes and heavily filled products. A toll blending crack filler manufacturer needs mixers that move high solids and fillers that pack a paste cleanly into cartridges, pails or tubs.
Ask which pack formats the site fills and whether you supply the containers, as you usually do under a toll.
The federal air rule for coating manufacture
Under 40 CFR Part 63 Subpart HHHHH, an operator of miscellaneous coating manufacturing operations is subject to the rule where those operations are at or part of a major source of hazardous air pollutants, manufacture coatings and process, use or produce HAP. The operations covered include process vessels, storage tanks, pumps, agitators and cleaning operations.
Whether a given site is a major source is the site's question, not yours, but ask a solvent coatings blender which air rules it operates under. A clear answer is a good sign.

Before you send a formulation
Settle confidentiality and non-use first, as in protecting a formulation, then what to qualify in any blender.
