Toll blending metalworking fluids

Updated

Metalworking fluids are blends that have to stay stable for months in a customer's sump. Stability and cleanliness decide which toll blending metalworking fluid manufacturer can make them.

Metalworking fluids toll blending services

Straight oils, soluble oils, semi-synthetics and synthetics are made differently, and a concentrate that has to emulsify on dilution depends on the order and temperature of addition. Ask whether the site has run your type and whether it heats during blending.

Ask how emulsion stability is tested on each batch and whether that test is on the certificate of analysis.

Contamination

Metalworking fluids are prone to microbial growth, so cleanliness of tanks and lines between batches matters more than for most blends. Ask how equipment is cleaned and how water used in the blend is controlled.

Why the hazard matters to your customers

OSHA notes that metalworking fluids can cause adverse health effects through skin contact with contaminated materials, spray or mist and through breathing mist or aerosol, and addresses those hazards in its standards. That is a reason to agree tight specifications and clean blending, because what leaves the blender ends up in a machine shop.

Questions, answered directly

What makes metalworking fluid toll blending different?

Emulsion stability and cleanliness. A concentrate has to emulsify reliably on dilution and resist microbial growth, which depends on addition order, temperature and clean equipment. Ask how both are tested on each batch.

Do I supply the additives?

Under a toll, yes: you buy the base oils and additives and own them throughout. Under contract manufacturing the blender buys them, and the formulation may be theirs.
